Dad: I am at the store now. Your mother left this list on the refrigerator.
SHOPPING LIST
---
2 bars of soap
1 box of tangerines
4 toothbrushes (pink for Ann)
1 small wok
Total money: 900
Ann: The wok is for Grandma, right? Please get the one with two handles.
Dad: Good idea. The store has no tangerines today, so I will buy a watermelon.
Ann: Fine. And my toothbrush must be pink, or I will not use it.
Before you begin
Each group gets one wok, one pot, four plates, and a set of tools. Count them at the start and again at the end. If a knife is missing, tell the teacher at once; do not look for it yourself.
Dry every glass with a clean towel before you put it away. Wet glasses left on the shelf may break, and broken glass is hard to find on a light floor. The room must be ready for the next class in ten minutes.
Dear Sir,
I bought a set of four glasses at your store on Middle Road last Saturday. When I opened the box at home, two of them already had a long mark down the side. I did not drop them; the box was still closed.
I would like two new glasses, or half of my money back. I still have the paper you gave me, and I can bring the box to the store this week. I usually shop with you and have never had a problem before, so I hope this is easy to solve.
Please call me after five o'clock on any weekday.
Sincerely, Mei Lin
Look at a toothbrush. It is so common that we hardly think about it, and yet it is more important than it looks, yet someone had to decide how long the handle should be and how soft the top should feel.
Good tools are usually quiet. A knife that cuts well does not ask for attention; we call upon it every day, and we notice it only on the day it stops cutting well. The same is true of a rope, a towel, or a simple wooden spoon.
Perhaps this is why we seldom thank the people who make such things. They are not famous, and they win no prize. But the next time you open a door or hold a pan without thinking about it, someone has already done that thinking for you.
