Passage 1
The Wall Nobody Finished

In the north of our county there is a stone wall that runs for two miles and then simply stops. It was started in the 15th century by a king who feared a military force from the sea. (11) Some say the money ran out; others say the enemy never came. The truth is simpler: the king died, and the next one feared other things. Farmers took the stones for their own walls, (12) today you can find a piece of a castle in a pig house. (13), the wall is the most visited place in the county. The view is beautiful and the path is full of visitors, but people do not come to see what was built, (14) to stand where somebody changed his mind.

Questions 11–14
11
AIt was finished in only two years.
BThe king built three more walls.
CThe wall has never been visited.
DNobody knows exactly why it was never finished.

Passage 2
Why Old Stories Change

Every country tells stories about its own beginning, and every one of those stories has been changed. (15) A story is repeated because it is useful now, not because it is correct. A king who lost a war may become a king who chose peace. A war that began over land may be remembered as a war about a word. None of this is a lie, (16) each teller believed what he said. (17), history is not a box of facts but a conversation that never ends. The useful question is not only what happened, (18) who is telling me, and what do they need me to feel?

Questions 15–18
15
AThe change is always written down.
BNo story is ever repeated twice.
COnly one country does this.
DThe change seldom happens all at once.

School History Project

Grade 8 · Hand in at the beginning of March

Choose one building, road or bridge in this town and find out what was there before it. The principal will read the best three.

  • Talk to at least one person over seventy; a mechanic, a farmer, anyone is OK
  • Find one paper, photo or map from before 1990
  • Write two pages; a third page of pictures is welcome but not needed

You may not use only what you find online. At least one of your sources must be a person or a paper you have held in your hand. If the person you talk to cannot remember clearly, write that down too; it is part of the answer.

Do not choose the old wall. Eleven students chose it last year, and the library has no more material about it.

ARTICLE
Who Gets a Statue

Walk through any old town and count the stone figures. Most of them show men who took armies to war. Almost none are of the people who built the roads under your feet.

This is not because nobody thought those people mattered. It is because a stone figure costs money, and for most of history the people with money were the people with power. A town remembers what somebody had the money to have remembered.

Some towns now put up small signs: the name of the woman who ran the first school, the family who kept the river boat for eighty years. They cost almost nothing. But a child who reads one learns that history is not only made by the people on horses.

Questions 28–30
28What is the main idea of this article?
AStone figures should be taken down
BWho is remembered often depends on who could pay
CSoldiers should get more stone figures
DTowns should build fewer roads
29According to the writer, why are there few stone figures of the people who built roads?
AA stone figure costs money and they had none
BTheir work was not important
CNobody knows their names
DRoads are made new often
30What do some towns do now?
ABuild larger stone figures
BClose the old roads
CPut up small signs about ordinary people
DAsk children to pay for signs
