Passage 1
The Island That Grew
In 1963 an American boat near the coast of one northern country saw smoke coming out of the sea. It was not a ship on fire. (11) Within several weeks there was land where the map showed only water, and within two years the island was a mile across. Nobody was allowed to set foot on it, (12) scientists wanted to watch what would come first. A seed arrived in the mouth of a bird. Then a plant, then an insect, then a low gray plant. (13), a new piece of the world was built in front of people who were writing it down. We usually see land as something that was always here, (14) this one had a birthday.

Passage 2
Why Maps Are Never Finished
A map looks like a fact, but every map is a choice. (15) A map made for a sailor shows deep water and rocks; a map made for a walker shows hills and paths, and leaves the sea almost blank. Neither is wrong. Coasts move, rivers change their beds, and a plain that was green in one memory is gray in another, (16) paper cannot follow all of it. (17), every map is a picture of one moment, made for one kind of person. This is worth remembering when we look at a map of somewhere we have never been. It shows us what somebody chose to show, (18) what they left out may be the part we would have cared about.
✔ 正確答案:(A) You have to decide what to leave out first.
解析空格後舉出水手地圖與步行者地圖的取捨差異,所以空格要先點出「必須決定略去什麼」。
16

Band
Cif
Dbecause
✔ 正確答案:(B) and

17

DAt first
✔ 正確答案:(B) In other words

Rules for the Forest Path
Open 6:00 to 18:00 · Free · About two hours
Stay on the path; the ground beside it is soft and full of mud
Take everything home with you, even a small piece of paper
Do not feed any animal you meet, especially the monkeys; they are most active at noon and may make you laugh, but keep away
The path is level for the first kilometer and then rises. If you have a young child who needs to sleep, or find walking hard, the first part and back is a pleasant hour on its own.

EMAIL
A Letter about a Changed Coast
Dear Miss Wu,
You asked us to write about a place that has changed. I chose the beach below my grandmother's village on the west coast.
When my mother was a child, the sand went out about two hundred meters. In an old photo she is standing far from the water. In the golden light of evening today, the sea reaches the road, and the small temple that used to be behind the beach now has water at its back wall twice a month.
My grandmother does not say the word climate. She says the sea has become greedy. I am not sure the two ways of saying it mean different things. I would like to write about this for the class project if that is all right.

CThey belong to an older time
DThey are wrong
✔ 正確答案:(B) They may mean the same as the word climate

The Land Under the Names
Every hill and river in this country carries a name, and most names were given twice. One name came from the people who lived there first; another was written later on a formal, official map.
Sometimes the two are close. Often they are not. A river called Clear Water in one language may be named after a person in the other. When only one name is printed, a memory quietly disappears.
Some towns now put both names on the sign. It costs almost nothing and changes nothing on the ground. But a child who reads two names learns something a single name can never teach: that this place was here, and full of people, before the map arrived.
