Passage 1
The Ship My Grandfather Painted

My grandfather worked as a sailor for thirty years and never once took a photo. What he brought home was a small painting of every ship he sailed on. (11) In each one the ship is far away, a single tree stands on the shore, and the sea takes up most of the paper. I asked him once why the ships were so small. He said a sailor does not remember the ship; he remembers the water around it, (12) the water is never the same twice. (13), I keep the paintings in a row along my wall at home. Nobody who visits knows what they are, (14) each one is a year of somebody's life.

Passage 2
Why Ships Still Carry Almost Everything

A plane crosses the ocean in twelve hours; a ship takes three weeks. (15) Nine out of ten things in your room came by sea. The reason is weight. A plane pays for every kilogram it lifts, (16) a ship sits on the water, and that costs nothing. One large ship can carry as much as eight thousand planes and use far less oil for each box. (17), the sea is still the cheapest road in the world. This is easy to forget because we never see it. The plane is in the sky above the city, (18) the ship arrives at night, at a place most of us have never visited.

Questions 15–18

NOTICE
Rules for the Harbor Boat Tour

Boats leave at 9:00, 13:00 and 16:00 · About ninety minutes

  • Come to the desk fifteen minutes early; we cannot wait for anybody
  • Children under four sail free but must sit with a parent
  • Stay in your seat while the boat is moving away from the land

Our group leader is able to answer any question, and the view is fantastic. Food is sold on board, but you may bring your own. Please do not feed the birds; they follow the boat for days and bother the next group.

If the sea is not calm, only the 13:00 boat will sail. We decide at 11:00 and put a note on the door. Money is given back at once if we do not sail; there is no need to ask.

ARTICLE
The Slow Road That Feeds Us

We think of the sea as a place for holidays. For most of the world it is a road, and almost everything we own has travelled on it.

A single ship may carry twenty thousand boxes, and one box may hold every chair in your school. Because the cost for each box is so low, a shirt can be made on one side of the world and sold on the other for less than the price of a meal.

This is why an event far away can empty a shelf near you. When one narrow sea road closed for six days a few years ago, shops in dozens of countries ran short within a month. The sea is quiet, but it is not far from your door.

Questions 28–30
28What is the main idea of this article?
AHolidays by the sea are too common
BShips should carry fewer boxes
CShirts should be made closer to home
DThe sea is a road that ties our daily life to the world
29Why can a shirt be sold so cheaply far from where it was made?
AShips travel very fast
BShirts are simple to make
CThe cost for each box at sea is very low
DShops pay no rent
30What happened when one narrow sea road closed for six days?
AShips went a different way at no cost
BPrices fell everywhere
CShops in many countries ran short within a month
DNothing changed at all
