Passage 1
The Day School Closed

A typhoon was coming, and at ten P.M. the news said school would be closed. My sister and I clapped in the living room. (11) The wind began at four in the morning. By seven our sidewalk had turned into a river, and a million leaves lay on it, and the old tree by the gate had lost half its leaves. We could not go out, (12) the power went off at noon. We ate cold rice, drank warm Coke until our stomachs hurt, and told stories in the dark. (13) that day is the one my sister still talks about, more than any trip we have taken. A free day is not the same as a good one, (14) sometimes a bad day makes the better story.

Passage 2
Why Weather Is Hard to Guess

People often laugh when the weather report is wrong. (15) A report for tomorrow is right about nine times in ten; a report for next week is closer to six. The reason is simple to say and hard to live with: small things grow. A change too small to measure this morning can decide whether it rains on Sunday, (16) no machine can measure every corner of the sky. (17), weather experts do not tell us what will happen; they tell us what is likely. A chance of rain of seven in ten does not mean it will rain, (18) that is exactly what most of us hear.

Questions 15–18
15
ASo nobody should listen to them.
BWeather cannot be studied at all.
CMost people never watch the news.
DIn fact, reports are better than we think.

NOTICE
What to Do in a Storm

Keep this page where the whole family can see it.

  • Fill a bucket with water before the storm; the water may stop
  • Put a light and a radio where you can find them in the dark
  • Stay away from windows when you hear thunder close by

Do not go out to look at the river, even if the rain seems to have stopped. Water can rise again in twenty minutes, and the ground near a river gives way without a sound.

If the power goes off, do not open the refrigerator. Food inside stays cold for about four hours if the door is kept shut. Check on any neighbor who lives alone once the wind drops, but do not knock after ten P.M. if you are not worried.

Questions 22–24
22Why should people fill a bucket before the storm?

ARTICLE
Weather We Remember

Ask any voter about the weather last March and they will not know. Ask about the typhoon of ten years ago and they will tell you where they were standing.

We do not remember weather; we remember what the weather made us do. A storm that kept a family in one room for two days is stored as a family story, not as rain. This is why old people say the winters were colder when they were young. Some were, but the ones they remember are the ones that changed a day.

Climate is measured in numbers over eighty years, and almost nobody feels it directly. That is the hard part: the thing we can feel is the storm, and the thing that matters is the slow line under it.

Questions 28–30
28What is the main idea of this article?
AWinters were colder in the past
BOld people remember weather better
CWe remember storms but cannot feel slow climate change
DTyphoons should be given names
29Why do people remember a typhoon from ten years ago?
AIt was the strongest one
BIt was on the news for weeks
CThey wrote it down
DIt changed what they did that day
30Why does the writer say climate is hard to feel?
AIt only changes in winter
BExperts do not agree about it
CIt happens in other countries
DIt is measured in numbers over eighty years
