Passage 1
My First Week at Work

In my first week at the office I was afraid of the phone. Every time it rang I hoped somebody else would pick it up. On the third day my boss saw me look at it and walk away. (11) She picked it up herself, said a few words, and put it down in under a minute. Then she said: that is all it ever is. I still did not like the phone, (12) I began to answer it. By the end of the month I picked it up first. (13) I understood what she had done. She showed me how small the thing really was, (14) a thing you have seen somebody do is no longer a wall.

Questions 11–14

Passage 2
What a Job Title Does Not Say

Two people can hold the same job and do work that has almost nothing in common. (15) One clerk spends the day on documents; another in the same division spends it calming people who are angry. The title on the door says clerk for both. This matters when a young person chooses a career, (16) a title is often all he has to go on. (17), the better question is not what is the job but what is the day. Asking somebody what he actually did last Tuesday tells you more than any chart, (18) few of us think to ask it.

Questions 15–18
15
AThis never happens in the same division.
BWorkers pick their own job titles.
CThis is easy to see in a large company.
DMost offices have only one clerk.

Rules for Students Who Work Outside School

Please read this before you take a job outside school.

  • Students under sixteen may not work after 20:00
  • Eight hours a week is the top limit during term
  • Bring a paper signed by a parent to the office before you start

A job can teach you things no class can, and anyone may love the work more than any school subject. It can also take the hours you need for sleep. If your marks fall for two months, we will ask you to stop for one term. This is not to punish you; it is the promise we make to your family.

If your boss asks you to work longer than the law allows, tell us. You will not get into trouble, and we will speak to the company. Many students do not know that the law is on their side.

ARTICLE
The Work Nobody Puts on a Chart

Look at any office chart and you will see boxes and lines. What you will not see is the person who remembers that the electric printer needs a hard push, or who owns the one fancy pen that never fails, or who notices when a quiet worker has stopped eating lunch with the others.

This kind of work has no name and takes real time. It is seldom done by the director. It is often done by somebody near the bottom of the chart, and it is what keeps the boxes above from breaking down.

When such a person leaves, the company is surprised by how much stops working. Nothing was written down, so nothing can be handed over. The lesson is simple: the map of an office is never the office.

Questions 28–30
28What is the main idea of this article?
AEvery company needs a better printer
BDirectors work harder than clerks
COffice charts should have more boxes
DImportant work is done that no office chart shows
29Who usually does this kind of work?
ASomebody near the bottom of the chart
BThe director
CA new worker on the first day
DNobody at all
30Why is the company surprised when such a person leaves?
AThe person never said goodbye
BA new director must be hired
CMuch stops working and nothing was written down
DThe chart must be made again
