Passage 1
The Jar on the Shelf

When I was eleven, my mother gave me an empty box and told me to put one coin in it every Friday. She did not tell me what it was for. (11) By the end of that year the box was heavy, and I had stopped thinking about it. Then my bicycle wheel broke. My mother was gentle but did not give me the money, (12) she pointed at the shelf. I paid for the repair myself, and I remember the weight of the box in my hands. (13) I understood the lesson she had not put into words. Money that arrives slowly feels different in the hand, (14) nobody can teach that with a speech.

Passage 2
Why Small Money Is Hard to See

A person who would never pay two thousand dollars for a jacket may pay sixty dollars for a drink every working day. (15) Sixty times two hundred and fifty days is fifteen thousand, more than seven jackets. We judge a price against the thing beside it, not against a year. Banks know this, (16) a small monthly fee is simpler to sell than a large one paid once. Some people now write down every cost for one month, not to feel bad, but to see the shape of it. (17), they often find that the big choices were never the problem. The money did not go in one loud moment, (18) in five hundred quiet ones.

Questions 15–18

BNobody drinks anything at work.

NOTICE
School Bank Day

Every Thursday · 12:30 to 13:00 · Room 105

Bring any coins or notes you want to save. This is a common job for Class 303, and the answer to every question is yes if you ask early. Two students from Class 303 will write down the amount and give you a paper with your name and your number on it. The money goes to a real bank at the end of each month.

  • Smallest amount: ten dollars
  • You may take your money out on any Thursday
  • Nobody may put in money for another student

There is no fee, and the school does not charge anything for this. We are not trying to teach you to save every dollar. We are trying to show you what happens to a small amount over a year, so that later, when a bank offers you something, you will know the questions to ask.

ARTICLE
The Price of Being Poor

It costs more to have less. This sounds strange, but ask anybody who has counted coins at the end of a month.

A person with money buys rice in a large bag at a lower price for each bowl. A person without money buys a small bag every few days and pays more each time. One can wait for a sale; the other must buy today. One pays a bill on time; the other pays a late charge.

None of this is about being careless with money. It is about time and choice, and having less of both. When we say somebody should simply save more, we are often asking them to do the one thing that is hardest where they stand.

Questions 28–30
28What is the main idea of this article?
AEverybody should wait for a sale
BRice should be sold only in large bags
CHaving less money often makes each thing cost more

30What does the writer say about telling people to save more?
