Passage 1
The Man Who Fixed Things
My uncle repairs bicycles in a small shop behind the lake. He is not good at business. If a child comes in with a broken wheel, he fixes it in a quiet manner and says nothing about money. In the fall he keeps a bowl of soup by his side. (11) My aunt says he will never be rich. He agrees, (12) he has never once changed the way he works. Last winter he was ill for a month, and people he had helped came by turns to keep the shop open. (13) I saw that his way of working was not foolish at all. For thirty years he had been lending small things to everybody around him, (14) the whole countryside gave them back in one month.
Questions 11–14
11
AHe charges more than other shops.
BHe has never asked anybody to pay quickly.
CHe closes the shop every afternoon.
DHe only repairs cars, not bicycles.
13
AOnly then
BFor example
CHowever
DAt first
Passage 2
What We Call Character
We like to say that a person is brave or lazy, as if it were written inside them. (15) A student who is lazy in one class may work hard in another. A guide who is patient with visitors may shake his head at his own children. What looks like character is often the room a person is standing in. This matters because we judge people from one meeting, (16) one meeting shows us one room only. (17), it does not mean character is nothing. It means character is a habit we build, not a thing we are given, (18) a habit can be changed at any age.
Questions 15–18
15
ASo everybody is the same in the end.
BNobody has ever thought about this.
CBut this is harder than it looks.
DMost people never change at all.
17
AHowever
BTherefore
CAt first
DIn the same way

Class Rules We Wrote Together
Room 302 · Made by the class, not by the teacher
- If you borrow something, give it back the same day.
- Nobody eats in front of somebody who has no food.
- When one person is speaking, everybody else listens.
- If you break something, say so before somebody asks.
We wrote these rules in September after a long talk, not after a speech from anybody about what makes a class easy to be in. Everybody had to agree to every line, so it took two afternoons.
These rules are not about being good. They are about being able to work beside each other for a year. We will read them again in January and change any line that has stopped being useful.

AThe whole class
BThe teacher
CThe school office
DThe class leader
23Why did writing the rules take two afternoons?

CTo help the teacher punish students
DTo win a school prize
EMAIL
A Word for a Classmate
Dear Mrs. Kao,
You asked us to write about a classmate who should get the character prize. I choose Lin Wei.
Wei is not the top student and he never speaks in class. But he is the one who stays behind on Friday to put the chairs back, and he does it whether or not anybody is watching. When Ming lost his textbook in May, Wei gave him his own for three weeks and told nobody.
I know the prize often goes to a student with high marks. I am not saying Wei should win because he is kind and quiet. I am saying that what he does takes more work than it looks like, and that nobody has ever thanked him for it.

ARTICLE
Being Good When Nobody Looks
Most people are honest when somebody is watching. The interesting question is what happens in an empty room.
In one famous test, a shop left a box of coffee with a price list and no person at the desk. On weeks when a picture of eyes was placed above the box, people paid nearly three times as much as on weeks with a picture of flowers. Nobody in the shop knew why they paid more.
This is not a sad fact about people. It shows that honesty is not only a thing inside us; it is something a place can make simple or hard. If we want a school or a town where people behave well, we should spend less time asking who is good, and more time building rooms where being good is the simple choice.
Questions 28–30
28What is the main idea of this article?
APictures of eyes should be used everywhere
BPeople are dishonest when alone
CA place can make honest acts simple or hard
DCoffee should not be sold without a salesperson
29What happened in the weeks with a picture of eyes?
APeople paid about three times more
BSomebody sat at the desk
CThe shop lost money
DFewer people bought coffee
30What does the writer suggest we spend more time on?
AAsking who is good
BBuilding places where being good is easy
CWatching people closely
DMaking more rules
