Passage 1
The Guy in the Next Bed
I stayed nine nights in a hospital in Kaohsiung when I was fifteen. The guy in the next bed was sixty, had cancer, and had been there for four months. He never once asked what was wrong with me. (11) He would tell me which nurse worked at night and when the light in the yard came on against the evening sky. I was afraid of the shots, (12) he always looked at the ceiling at that moment and started a long story about his brother. He left before I did. (13) I understand that he was doing the only thing he could. A hospital takes away almost everything a person can give, (14) attention is still free.

Passage 2
Why We Wait So Long
Most people in this country see a doctor within a day of feeling ill. That sounds good, and for a broken arm it is. (15) A doctor who has six minutes for each patient cannot ask what else is going on in a life. A cough may be a cough, (16) it may also be a room with no air and a job that never stops. Some hospitals in the region now give each new patient twenty minutes with a nurse first. The nurse asks about sleep, food, and home. (17), the doctor gets a fuller picture before the door even opens. The waiting room is not shorter, (18) fewer people come back three times with the same problem.

- If you are taking a drug for the first time, ask what it should not be taken with

EMAIL
A Letter to a Nurse
Dear Nurse Lin,
You will not remember me. I was the boy with the cut hand in Room 12 last August, the one who would not let anybody near him.
You did not tell me to be brave. You sat down, showed me the small silver tool, and said it would hurt for about six seconds. Then you counted them out loud with me. It was the first time in that hospital that somebody told me the truth about how bad it would be.
I am studying now to work in a hospital myself, and I look forward to it every day. I wanted you to know that a person can decide what to do with his life because of six seconds that somebody counted for him.
Thank you. Chang Wei

ARTICLE
The Question Doctors Are Taught to Ask
For a long time, a doctor was trained to ask one question: what is wrong with you? It is a good question, and it finds a broken bone quickly.
Some schools now teach a second one: what has happened to you? The first question looks for a part of the body. The second looks for a life. A sick child who cannot sleep may not need a drug; he may need a quiet house. Every human being carries more than one story.
This change is slow, because the second question takes longer and cannot be measured well. But doctors who ask it say something simple: people get better faster when somebody has heard the whole story, not only the part that shows on the skin.
Questions 28–30
28What is the main idea of this article?
ADoctors should stop asking what is wrong
BDrugs work better than talking
CSchools for doctors are too slow to change
DAsking about a patient's life helps as much as asking about the body
29According to the article, what does the second question look for?
AA life
BA faster cure
CA cheaper drug
DA broken bone
30Why is this change slow?
APatients do not want to answer
BDoctors do not believe it works
CHospitals are not allowed to try it
DIt takes longer and is hard to measure
