Passage 1
The Seat Beside Me

On my first day at the new school, I sat alone at the back and said hello to nobody. At lunch a girl named Ping put her lunch box on my table and asked if the seat was free. (11) She talked about her dog, her brother, and a photo she had taken of a goose and an ox at a farm somewhere in the south. I only said yes and no, (12) she did not seem to mind. She came back the next day, and the day after that. (13) we had become the kind of friends who do not need to talk all the time. Friendship, I learned, does not always begin with two people talking; (14) it begins with one person who keeps coming back.

The Neighbor Above Us

For two years the man who lived above us was only a sound: shoes at six, a chair at ten. My mother said we should invite him down, but we never did. (15) Then one Tuesday the heat went off in the whole building. Everyone came out to the ground floor, holding cups of hot juice, and he was there too, a quiet fellow in a grand old scarf. He put out his hand and turned out to be a teacher who had once taught at my school. We talked for an hour, (16) the building was cold. (17), my mother leaves a piece of cake at his door every Tuesday. It is a small thing, (18) it has changed how the whole floor feels.

NOTICE
New Partner Program at Sun Hill

Would you like to meet someone new?

This term our school will try a partner program. Each student who joins will be given one partner from another class. The two of you will meet once a week for twenty minutes and talk about anything you like: a film, a pet, the type of music you play, or a hard week.

  • Sign up at the office before Friday
  • Meetings are on Tuesday, in the quiet room above the library
  • You may ask to change partners after one month
  • A roller skate group meets in the same room on Friday

You do not need to become close friends. The only rule is that you behave with respect and that you come when you say you will. Many students say the hardest part is the first hello.

ARTICLE
Why the First Hello Is Hard

Most people say they would like more friends, yet in a room of strangers almost everyone looks at the floor. If we all want the same thing, why is the first word so hard?

One reason is that we think others are judging us, when in fact they are worried about themselves. A second reason is that we expect too much from one meeting. We hope for a terrific talk, and a short, plain one feels like a failure.

People who find it easy to make friends are seldom the one who makes everyone laugh. They are simply the ones who ask a second question, and who come back a week later. Friendship, it seems, depends less on what we say than on whether we show up again.

Questions 28–30
28What is the main idea of this article?
APeople should not talk to strangers
BMaking friends depends more on coming back than on being clever
COnly funny people can make friends
DOne good meeting is enough for a friendship
29According to the writer, what are other people in the room usually doing?
ALooking for someone to laugh with
BWorrying about themselves
CJudging everyone carefully
DWaiting to be introduced
30Why does a plain conversation feel like a failure?
ABecause nobody asks a second question
BBecause the room is too quiet
CBecause we have too many friends
DBecause we expect too much from one meeting
