Passage 1
The Shop on the Corner

Mrs. Kao has run a small shop on our corner since I was a child. She knows which customer likes soft bread and who cannot eat sugar. When a child begins to cry at her door, she always comes out. Two years ago a big supermarket opened across the road. (11) Her shop grew quiet, and she began to close at seven. Then something strange happened. People who had moved to the supermarket started coming back, (12) they missed being known by name. Mrs. Kao never made her prices lower. (13), she wrote each regular customer's favorite item on a card behind the desk. Passage 2
Where Does a Banana Come From?

A banana on a supermarket shelf looks simple, but it has already made a long trip. A farmer in the south picks it while it is still green, and cold does not kill it on the way. A company puts it in a cold box, and a truck brings it north along the highway. (15) By the time you pay for it, five or six businesses have each taken a small part of the price. Most people never think about this, (16) they only see the number on the shelf. Some markets now print the farmer's name beside the fruit. (17), people can see who grew it. It costs the market nothing, (18) many customers say they like the idea.

Weekend Sale at Green Trade Market

Two days only · Saturday and Sunday

  • Fruit from southern farms: buy two, get one free
  • All bread after four o'clock: half price
  • Free sample of our new tea at the front desk (ask any question there)

Our market works with small farms, not with large companies, and we sell what they produce that same week. Each week we choose one farm and print its story on the wall near the basement stairs. This week the farm belongs to a family that has grown tea for four generations.

Please bring your own bag, and do not rush at the door when we open. Bags are no longer supplied free, and the money we save goes to the farms. Parking is free for one hour if you spend over three hundred dollars.

ARTICLE
Why the Same Shirt Costs More

Two shops on the same street may sell the same shirt at different prices. Many people think one shop is simply trying to take more money, but the reason is often less simple.

A large firm buys ten thousand shirts at one time, so each shirt costs it less. A small shop buys fifty, and it also pays rent, which can cost it an arm and a leg, power, and the pay of the person who puts them on the shelf. The price card itself carries all of that.

This does not mean the higher price is always fair. It does mean that a price is a story about supply, not just a choice made by one owner who wants more money. Before you decide, it may help to ask what you are really paying for.

Questions 28–30
28What is the main idea of this article?
APeople should buy the cheapest shirt
BSmall shops should close down
CLarge firms always sell better shirts
DA price depends on many costs, not only on the owner
29According to the article, why can a large firm charge less?
AIt sells only online
BIt pays less for each shirt
CIt buys a very large number at one time
DIt pays no rent
30What does the writer suggest we do?
AAsk what the price really covers
BWait for a sale every time
CBuy ten thousand shirts together
DAlways choose the small shop
