四、閱讀測驗(8 題,每題 2 分,共 16 分)

(A) L2 Battling Fake News 短文取自金門高中 112 上期中1 Cloze (A) 原文

Fake news is usually defined as news containing false information that appears true. Its existence has long been an issue. In recent years, the Internet and social media have made creating and sharing news easier and faster. With so much fake news being spread every day, it is now more important to think critically about the news we read online. Fake news basically comes in two forms. One is from sloppy journalism and the other is due to a deliberate attempt to achieve some social results.

In 1998, a British researcher published a small-scale study, which linked the MMR vaccine to autism. Soon after, there was much coverage of this flawed study. Though later studies with larger samples countered the British researcher’s claim and proved the original study misleading, the damage had been done. Parents who were exposed to the coverage of these false reports refused to vaccinate their children for fear that it might do more harm than good. For another example, a major hypermarket sent an email to the media outlets in 2018, exaggerating an upcoming hike in the price of toilet paper. The reporting prompted a wave of panic buying among Taiwanese people, many of whom feared that they would run out of it soon. Nevertheless, people later found out that the news was not real and that the true purpose of the hypermarket was to advertise its own toilet paper promotion.

After these events, every one of us should learn to tell fake news from real news. The true news usually includes a writer’s name, multiple sources, and objective language that doesn’t appeal to readers’ emotion. These features can help us avoid falling into the trap of fake news so that we can see the world in a balanced perspective.

Rudyard Kipling was a famous British writer, born in India on December 30, 1865. His childhood in India influenced much of his writing. When he was five years old, Kipling was sent to England for his education, which was common for British children living in India. However, he did not have a happy time in school, and this experience affected him for the rest of his life.

Kipling returned to India as a young man and began working as a journalist. During this time, he started writing stories and poems. His first book of poems, Departmental Ditties, was published in 1886. However, Kipling is best known for his books The Jungle Book (1894) and Kim (1901). The Jungle Book is a collection of stories about a boy named Mowgli, who is raised by animals in the jungle. These stories are still very popular today and have been made into movies and TV shows.

Kipling was also known for his poetry, including famous works like If— and Gunga Din. His writing often focused on themes of bravery, loyalty, and the British Empire.

In 1907, Kipling became the first English-language writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, which is one of the highest honors for a writer. His ability to create memorable stories and poems has made him one of the most well-known authors of his time. Despite some criticism of his views on the British Empire, his contributions to literature are still appreciated today. Kipling passed away on January 18, 1936, but his works continue to inspire readers around the world.
