“Formosa” is commonly known as an unofficial name for Taiwan. However, many people don’t know that there is another Formosa 31 on the banks of the Paraguay River in Argentina. Let’s take a detailed look at these two namesakes and investigate the aspects 32 which they are similar and those in which they differ.
Interestingly, it appears that both Formosas were unintentionally discovered by European explorers in the sixteenth century. It is believed that a crew of Portuguese sailors first came across Taiwan and named it “Ilha Formosa,” which means “beautiful island.” 33 , Formosa was the European name given to an area of land discovered in South America by Spanish explorers around the same time. These explorers considered the area they had found to possess 34 exceptional beauty that they decided to live there.
35 their shared name and historical similarities, there is another interesting geographical phenomenon that connects these two locations. If someone in northern Taiwan dug a hole straight down into the Earth, penetrated its core, and then continued digging to the surface on the other side, he or she would end up in Formosa, Argentina! It is amazing that these two bits of land are exactly antipodal!

Fake news comes in various forms, with two being the most common. One type arises from sloppy journalism, where information is published without proper fact-checking. The second type involves deliberately false information intended to achieve social or political outcomes, such as influencing votes or public opinion.
Two examples highlight the harm fake news can cause. In 1998, a flawed study linked the MMR vaccine to autism, causing a drop in vaccination rates. However, larger studies revealed that the original findings were inaccurate. Despite this, some parents continue to refuse vaccinations for their children, fearing that they might do more harm than good. More than two decades have now passed since the original study was published, but its effects can still be observed worldwide. The second example, from 2018 in Taiwan, involved a retailer falsely claiming an upcoming increase in the price of toilet paper. Two mainstream media outlets reported this without fact-checking, and others soon followed suit, amplifying the misinformation. This led to widespread panic buying among Taiwanese people, many of whom feared running out of this daily necessity.
With such significant events in mind, we are reminded that we must resist fake news. Whenever we come across new information, it is important to assess its validity lest we be tricked into accepting fake news as the truth. One notable feature of authentic news is the inclusion of the writer’s name, enabling readers to verify credibility. Another characteristic of real news is the citing of multiple primary sources, demonstrating a high level of authenticity. Where the article is published, such as by respected platforms like the BBC or CNN, indicates reliability. Lastly, factual reports use objective writing that does not appeal to readers’ emotions or use deliberately provocative language. These features help us avoid falling for fake news and see the world accurately.
The Jungle Book, written by Rudyard Kipling in 1894, is one of his most famous works. It is a collection of stories set in the jungles of India. The most well-known stories in the book are about a boy named Mowgli, who is raised by wolves. The Jungle Book is not just one story but a group of stories, each with its own lessons and themes. However, the stories about Mowgli are the most popular.
Mowgli is a young boy who is found in the jungle by a wolf pack when he is just a baby. The wolves decide to raise him as one of their own. Mowgli grows up learning the ways of the jungle with the help of his animal friends. One of his best friends is Baloo, a big, gentle bear who teaches him important lessons about life. Another important friend is Bagheera, a wise black panther who is always looking out for Mowgli’s safety.
The main conflict in the stories comes from Shere Khan, a fierce tiger who wants to kill Mowgli. Shere Khan believes that Mowgli does not belong in the jungle because he is human. Throughout the book, Mowgli has to deal with the threat of Shere Khan while trying to find his place in the jungle.
One of the twists in the story happens when Mowgli is forced to leave the jungle and live in a human village. This is a big change for Mowgli, as he has grown up thinking of himself as part of the jungle. However, he struggles to fit in with the humans and eventually returns to the jungle to face Shere Khan.
In the end, Mowgli defeats Shere Khan and proves that he belongs in the jungle. The Jungle Book is a story about friendship, bravery, and finding where you truly belong. It has been loved by readers for many years and has been made into movies and shows.
What is the writer’s purpose in describing Mowgli’s time in the human village?
答案:B he struggles to fit in with the humans and eventually returns to the jungle——重點在「融入的掙扎」與「想回叢林」。
